Amazon Overhauls Buy Box Algorithm, Shifting Weight From Price to Delivery Speed
Amazon's July 2026 Buy Box overhaul reduces the importance of price and raises delivery speed to 25-30% of the ranking weight.

Amazon has radically restructured its Buy Box allocation rules, moving from a two-stage qualify-then-compete model to a single-stage weighted ranking in which all eligible offers enter automatically.
Under the new system, launched July 20, 2026 in five European countries and the UK before a planned global rollout by year-end, hard performance thresholds have been removed. Metrics such as order defect rate and late shipment rate now act as negative scoring factors rather than outright disqualifiers. Most significantly for pricing strategy, delivery speed weight has surged to 25-30% of the ranking score, now exceeding price weight, which sits at roughly 25%. Price tolerance has also widened to 2-3%, meaning a seller offering guaranteed fast delivery can win the Buy Box even at a slightly higher price than a cheaper, slower competitor.
Analysts covering the change note that sellers who optimized purely for price competitiveness are seeing Buy Box ownership decline despite being at or below market price, because Amazon's data increasingly correlates customer satisfaction with delivery experience rather than price alone.
For marketplace sellers and the repricing software they use, the shift means pricing algorithms tuned solely to competitor price matching are now less effective. Buy Box strategy in 2026 requires optimizing delivery promise and seller performance metrics alongside price, rather than chasing the lowest number.
